Attorneys and Counselors at Law

Mehaffy Brubaker & Ernst was formed in 2004 by attorneys John Mehaffy, Margaret Brubaker, and Christopher Ernst, as successor to the Boulder law firm of Martin & Mehaffy and the Brighton law firm of Daniel, McCain & Brown. We and our predecessor firms have served Brighton, Boulder, Denver, North Metro and Colorado Front Range clients for over 60 years.

Margaret Brubaker (J.D., University of Denver) joined Daniel, McCain & Brown as an associate in 1984. In addition to serving her private clients, Margaret served as the City of Brighton’s Assistant City Attorney from 1991 to 1994, and since then has served as Brighton’s City Attorney. Aside from her municipal work, Margaret’s practice focuses mainly on estate planning and administration, probate, real property, and contracts.
Christopher Ernst (J.D., University of Colorado) joined Martin & Mehaffy as an associate in 1998. Since then Christopher has served as Brighton’s Assistant City Attorney, in addition to serving a wide variety of private clients. Christopher’s practice focuses mainly on real property and commercial transactions, construction and public works, contracts, corporate law, and commercial disputes.

  • Much of our practice focuses on representing the City of Brighton in a wide range of areas, including municipal government, land use planning and development, annexation, zoning and entitlements, elections, licensing, public works projects, construction contracts, eminent domain, special districts, urban renewal, utilities, finance, licensing, procurement, and human resources.
  • We are experienced in handling commercial and residential real estate transactions, including commercial leases, residential, commercial and industrial property transactions, due diligence, zoning, entitlements, and development in all phases, from negotiating acquisitions or sales through closing and subsequent development.
  • A vital part of our practice involves assisting clients in recognizing and achieving their estate planning needs and desires, preparing the necessary instruments and ensuring that their wishes are clearly understood and properly carried out. When the time comes to probate and administer the estate, we assist loved ones with compassion, efficiency and discretion.
  • We assist clients in commercial transactions, including formation and business planning for corporations, limited liability companies, and partnerships. Our practice includes expertise in the sale, acquisition, or merger of business entities, including negotiation and preparation of transaction documents, appropriate financial and security instruments, due diligence and closing.
  • When necessary, we represent clients in commercial disputes and litigation proceedings, including foreclosures, construction disputes, breach of contract cases and collections. In all cases, our goal is to protect our clients’ rights and interests, and to achieve a cost effective, efficient and acceptable result that makes business sense.
